I had to look it up, but unless I'm mistaken, this is called a White-headed Woodpecker. And I can see why they would name it that. This little cutie was exploring the backyard of my family cabin in the Mount Lassen area while I was back there reading my book. I had my camera nearby and was able to take some photographs without scaring it off. This was my first time seeing this type of woodpecker, and I am thankful to capture the photo and the memory.
"Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything." -Aaron Siskind
